Kolkata: Trinamool's Alifa Ahmed was sworn in as Kaliganj MLA on Wednesday. She was administered the oath by assembly speaker Biman Banerjee. However, she will remain an MLA for only 10 months, as Bengal polls are due in May 2026.
The bypoll was necessitated after the death of Alifa's father MLA Nasiruddin Ahamed. Alifa won the bypoll with a margin of more than 50,000 votes over second-placed Ashis Ghosh of BJP.
Alifa took oath at Nausar Ali Hall of the assembly, in the presence of parliamentary affairs minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, TMC parliamentary party chief whip Nirmal Ghosh, and cabinet members Chandrima Bhattacharya, Firhad Hakim, Moloy Ghatak and Pradip Mazumdar.
