Kolkata: Tourists planning their vacation to Darjeeling this festive season may encounter major travel disruptions. The Himalayan Transport Coordination Committee, the apex body representing local taxi syndicates, has announced a possible suspension of services to protest against the authorities' failure to address the region's worsening traffic situation.
The committee has also issued a stern warning if immediate steps are not taken, they may boycott the upcoming Vidhan Sabha elections. HTCC president Passing Sherpa said, "Despite our repeated appeals, there's been no coordination between the centre, state, and the GTA. We submitted several suggestions to ease traffic and parking problems in Darjeeling, but none were implemented. This time, we will send a final memorandum to all concerned authorities. Earlier, we wrote to both BJP representatives but received no response. At least the GTA formed a traffic advisory committee. However, if no concrete steps are taken, we will suspend our services during the upcoming tourist season," said Sherpa.
Sherpa added the final memorandum will be submitted by July 4. "The decision to halt operations during peak tourist season is aimed at drawing urgent attention to the issue. The traffic crisis doesn't just trouble tourists — it's affecting locals, especially students who struggle to reach school on time.
