• Cop, National Volunteer Force worker killed as truck hits patrol car in Bengal’s Purba Medinipur

  • Two people, including a sub-inspector of police, were killed and a constable was injured when a speeding truck hit the police patrol car on the Haldia-Mecheda National Highway 116 Tuesday night in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district.

    According to the police, Jayant Ghoshal, Sub-Inspector of Mahishadal Police Station, and Sheikh Sahnar alias Golam, a worker of the state’s National Volunteer Force, were killed in the accident. “A truck hit the patrol police car, overturned on the road,” said an officer.

    The police said the truck driver tried to flee after the accident, but he was reportedly chased and caught.

    They added that the driver has been arrested, and the truck seized.

    Ghoshal and other police personnel were patrolling the national highway and had parked their vehicle on the side of the road in the area adjacent to the Garughata bus stand. Ghoshal was inside the car.

    The police said a truck heading from Haldia to Mecheda came from the opposite direction at around 1.30 am and hit the police vehicle. As a result of the impact, it skidded to one side of the road.

    Police forces reached the spot after receiving the information. Ghoshal, other policemen were rescued from the mangled car and rushed to Tamralipta Medical College and Hospital. Doctors at the hospital declared Ghoshal and Sahnar dead after examining them.

    Constable Swapan Das, who sustained serious injuries, is undergoing treatment at the hospital.

    Soumyadeep Bhattacharya, Superintendent of Police, Purba Medinipur, reached the spot at night after receiving the news of the accident.

    The Mahishadal police said that they are investigating the incident.
