Kolkata: The finance department has given in-principle approval for the construction of the Shantinagar culvert at Chingrighata, though they have proposed rectifications to the DPR. In a communication with Kolkata Police at the Road Safety Committee meeting, KMDA officials said the rectifications have been carried out and the revised DPR is being resubmitted.
Joint CP, Traffic, requested KMDA to widen the main carriageway with an extra lane over Shantinagar culvert on the south-bound flank of Bypass near Chingrihata crossing to decongest the intersection. Cops want this culvert to be constructed at the earliest to manage the Chingrighata rush, even as RVNL has sought a blockade here for the construction of the Metro line. According to the plan, the culvert will be constructed near Captain Bheri with a width of close to 4 m.
"Tenders will be floated to take up work once the proposed project gets financial approval and is cleared by the finance department," said a govt official.
"We realised that we need infrastructural help now as almost all possible solutions have been tried here. We have been handed the slip road from south to north on Bypass — between Captain Bheri and Beleghata. But it will be unable to handle the pressure of bigger vehicles, including a thousand minibuses plying to Sector V," an officer said.
KMDA has initiated the process to engage an agency to conduct sub-soil investigation at multiple plots in Salt Lake's Sector IV area at Sukantanagar for the rehabilitation of the establishments that would be affected by the proposed widening of the road at Chingrighata.
