  • Kolkata: The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) will set up two more smart bus-passenger shelters in New Town. The authorities have so far set up 22 such shelters in different places off the main thoroughfares across the township. Officials said the new shelters will be set up on both sides of Street No. 372, near the office of National Insurance Co. Ltd. At present, commuters wait at designated spots to catch a bus without any proper shed.

NKDA officials said it is a continuous process to set up smart passenger shelters in as many major and busy bus stops in New Town as possible. The first smart shelter in New Town was set up in Nov 2020.

These shelters have a modern look along with commuter-friendly amenities as seen in cities abroad, like electronic display boards of bus arrivals and departure timings, a map of the area where the bus stop is located, and directions to move to nearby important places. There are seating arrangements with a solar panel roof and a newspaper and magazine corner, along with a kiosk.

An NKDA official added cycle stands are also being set up for commuters to park the two-wheelers in one place.
