Kolkata: The law college, where a first-year student was raped last Wednesday, appealed to Calcutta University on Thursday not to schedule any exam for the first-semester students on the campus.
The college was supposed to be a centre for the first-semester exams, scheduled to start on July 16.
Following the request, the controller section of the university has reportedly begun exploring the options of re-assigning exam venues to candidates who were supposed to write the exam at this college.
The college on Thursday uploaded a notice on its website, stating the campus was "temporarily" closed by the order of the governing body. A five-member fact-finding team from CU visited the college on Wednesday and asked the authorities to submit a detailed report on the crime, past governing body resolution books and admission records. The college has reportedly submitted the report, which will be reviewed by the committee. The university will also examine the process that the governing body followed while appointing the key accused, Monojit Mishra, also an alumnus, as an ad-hoc staff member despite him having 11 police cases registered against him. The admission records of the college will be cross-checked with CU admission records to probe complaints that admissions were influenced by Mishra and his associates and their manipulations in exchange for money.
With the institute currently being sealed, vice-principal Nayna Chatterji also urged the university to make arrangements for them to access exam forms filled by first-semester students. The college started the form-filling process on June 25. The survivor, too, had visited the campus last Wednesday to fill her exam form. Police claimed they had barricaded the college building to protect evidence.
CU interim VC Santa Datta De said, "The college has requested that it be allowed to access forms submitted by first-semester students. We will request the Calcutta High Court so that admit cards can be issued to the students for them to appear for the exam.
"Out of the 140 first-semester candidates, more than 20 are yet to fill their exam forms. The college has been asked to decide how those remaining students would be able to finish the process, especially since only 13 days were left for the exam. A CU official said, "We have proposed that the college completes form fill-up for the remaining students at the Hazra Law College. Now, the college has to take the final call and inform the controller section about their decision.
