  • Kolkata: The Met office has predicted intensified rain on Saturday and Sunday in Kolkata, during which, neighbouring districts could also be lashed by heavy rain. A few weather conditions, including the monsoon trough, which, at present, passes through Kolkata and Asansol, are expected to bring more rain.

Even though the city did not receive any heavy rain on Friday until late evening, intermittent showers and a cloudy sky shielded the city from heat. The maximum temperature dipped to 30°C from 31.2°C the previous day. With more rain on the radar, the city will continue to get a respite from the heat for now.

"Along with the monsoon trough, there is also a cyclonic circulation. Combined with a strong monsoon flow, we can expect more intensified rain in Kolkata with some heavy spells in some districts on Saturday and Sunday," said meteorologist H R Biswas, head of the weather forecast section at RMC, Kolkata.

According to a special IMD bulletin, the monsoon trough at mean sea level now passes through Bikaner, Jaipur, Datia, Sidhi, Asansol, Kolkata, and thence east-southeastwards to northeast Bay of Bengal. There is also an upper-air cyclonic circulation over northern parts of Gangetic Bengal and its neighbourhood, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, tilting southwards with height. An upper-air trough runs from north Gujarat to the cyclonic circulation over northern parts of Gangetic Bengal and its neighbourhood across MP, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand. "Light to moderate rainfall at most places, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely in some districts of Bengal," the bulletin said.

The Met office said while the rain could get lighter from Monday, the city can expect rain for at least five days. While some districts, like South and North 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Nadia, and Midnapore may get heavy rain, Kolkata will get moderate rain.
