• Left activist moves HC against police inaction

  • Kharagpur: Anil Das, a 66-year-old Left activist, moved Calcutta High Court on Friday accusing the police of inaction after Baby Kole, a woman Trinamool member, assaulted him on June 30.

In his petition, filed through lawyer Sabyasachi Chatterjee, Das accused the police of failing to arrest the accused despite there being clear evidence of assault and instead lodging false cases against Das himself.

Following the incident, Trinamool had distanced itself from the actions of Kole and a show-cause notice was issued to her. Trinamool district president Sujay Hazra said the party was yet to receive a response from Kole and that it would take appropriate action based on the response.

Meanwhile, Anil Das's wife Sushmita has written an open letter addressed to the chief minister expressing her dismay over the incident and the subsequent lack of action.

In the letter, she recounted the events of the day, highlighted her husband's dedication to public service describing him as a respected figure in Kharagpur who had worked tirelessly for the community over the past 30 years, and criticised the administration's silence.

A police official involved in the probe of the incident said two complaints were filed and were being investigated separately.
