Kolkata: Behala College has received an autonomous status from the University Grants Commission. The status will allow the institute to independently frame syllabus, conduct examinations and award degrees while maintaining its affiliation to the University of Calcutta.
"It's a historic moment for us. We received the letter from the university on Thursday. We have several plans for the journey towards academic excellence, but first, we have to complete the formalities," said college principal Sharmila Mitra. The letter from UGC mentions the approval for the autonomous status to the college for 10 years from the academic year 2025-26 to 2034-35. The college must apply to the UGC for an extension of status at least three months before the completion of the period.
St Xavier's College was the first institute in the city to receive autonomous status, followed by RKM Residential College, Narendrapur.
