  • Outgoing West Bengal president of BJP Sukanta Majumdar on Friday wrote a letter to all party workers in the state to thank them, asking them to walk with “greater unity”.

“In today’s political climate of Bengal, the journey must continue with even greater unity and determination,” Majumdar wrote, posting the letter on X.

On Thursday, Samik Bhattacharya officially became the new president of the state BJP. He replaced Majumdar who took charge in September 2021.

Majumdar wrote in his letter, “Throughout this journey, I have often felt like a student—leaving behind a life in academics only to find myself learning every day in a much larger classroom. Even while still learning, I was entrusted with the responsibility of State President. And that process of learning only deepened. The unshakable resolve and exceptional leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, National President Shri J P Nadda and other senior leaders have taught me so much. At the same time, I have learned just as much from the dedication and struggles of our grassroots workers.”

Praising party workers, he wrote, “When I took charge on September 20, 2021, I felt both immense pride and a deep sense of responsibility. I wondered—was I truly worthy of this role? But it was you, our karyakartas, who silenced that doubt. You embraced me as your own and stood shoulder to shoulder with me in every battle.”

“I had the opportunity to travel across West Bengal—from the hills to the sea. I visited towns, villages, neighbourhoods, and witnessed firsthand the diversity and spirit of this land. The hardships of our people never let me feel weary. I also worked to strengthen coordination between our booth-level karyakartas and the state leadership—to ensure the party grew at every level,” said Majumdar.

He added, “During my tenure, two major elections were held. Yes, we won fewer seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections than before. But the results made one thing clear—the West Bengal BJP’s foundation in urban areas is now as strong as it is in villages. In the Panchayat elections preceding that, we had made significant gains. Building on the momentum from 2018, we strengthened our base further, doubling our seat count across all three tiers. Despite the ruling party’s widespread intimidation, our strength grew—thanks to the fearless struggle of leaders and workers from the state down to the booth.”

“… If, during my tenure, I made mistakes or made difficult decisions that may have hurt anyone, I sincerely apologise,” wrote Majumdar.
