Kolkata: The rape at the law college has triggered a city-wide security overhaul, with educational institutions scrambling to reinforce their safety measures and ensure strict timing regulations. Several campuses, including Asutosh College, Hazra Law College and Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College, have issued clear notices alerting students not to stay on campus after college hours. A notice issued by Asutosh College mentioned that former students and outsiders need prior permission from the college authorities to enter the campus. Students also have to furnish valid identity cards to enter the campus.
Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College has instructed students not to stay at college after their class hours. Principal Sunanda Goenka said, "As a morning college, a majority of students leave at 11 am. For academic reasons, some students need to stay a few hours more, until 2 pm, but only after obtaining authority permission. We need to be alert because we share the campus with another college.
"In a recent notice, Hazra Law College made ID cards mandatory for students, and has restricted outsiders' entry. The notice said former students must record their names along with entry and exit times, mobile numbers, and purpose of visit. No one is allowed on campus beyond office hours, which are from 10 am to 5 pm. Jatindra Kumar Das, head of department of law, CU, said, "We have restricted outsiders' entry on campus. If they need to enter, they have to write a valid purpose along with their personal details.
"
Hiralal Mazumdar Memorial College for Women recently issued a notice saying the college will be closed after 5 pm and no student will be allowed to stay unless there is a scheduled class or laboratory session under the supervision of a faculty member. The college's student facility room, yoga room, and gym will be closed after 4 pm.
Other colleges, including Scottish Church and Surendranath College, said they check ID cards before entry on campus. At Scottish Church College, outsiders must enter their details in the log book. Several college principals also sounded hopeful after Calcutta HC ordered the locking of union rooms across colleges and universities.
