Kolkata: Two rallies will take to the streets of Bengal on Aug 9 to mark one year since the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor on the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital campus. Abhaya Mancha, a doctors' forum formed last year, has called for a protest march from Hazra Crossing to Kalighat, seeking faster justice for the victim. On the same day, BJP's Suvendu Adhikari called for a separate march to Nabanna.
Abhaya Mancha members said on Monday that they will support BJP's march because it aligns with their demand for justice in the RG Kar case as well as other atrocities against women in the state. They added that parents of the victim of the rape and murder will join their "Kalighat Chalo" march.
"On Aug 9, around 15,000 people from the city and four adjacent districts are slated to congregate at Hazra Crossing around 4pm and then march to Kalighat, where the CM lives," said Abhaya Mancha's joint convenor Tamonas Chaudhuri.
"We have sought permission from Kolkata Police to set up a stage at Hazra. But we won't seek permission for the protest march, which is our democratic right. Even if cops hinder us, we will move forward. If needed, we will knock on the court's door," Chaudhuri added.
On the morning of Aug 9, forum members will observe Raksha Bandhan. And on Aug 14, they called for a "Raat Dokhol" (Reclaim the Night) march across the city and the suburbs between 9pm and midnight.
