Kharagpur: A couple was found dead in a railway quarter in Kharagpur on Monday. Police discovered that their three-year-old daughter, who was unharmed, was sleeping beside her mother's body. The bodies of Deepa Mahat, 26, and her husband Vikram Putta, 37, were recovered from their residence in the Jayhindnagar area of Ward 15. Deepa was on the bed with her throat slit, while Vikram was hanging from an iron staircase. There was an iron rod near Deepa.
Initial investigation suggested domestic discord behind the tragedy. Police said Vikram, a driver by profession, might have killed Deepa on Sunday night before committing suicide. The bodies have been sent to Kharagpur Subdivision Hospital for autopsy.
Vikram was previously married to P Soni, with whom he has a 14-year-old son and 12-year-old twin daughters. Police said Soni, who visited Vikram's residence on Monday, found the bodies and subsequently informed the Kharagpur Town Police Station.
Locals said Vikram and Deepa had frequent quarrels, and Soni was recently getting closer to her former husband. Police have started an investigation.
