  • Kolkata: Parents of the RG Kar rape-and-murder victim have sought the permission from the Sealdah court for their lawyers to visit the place of occurrence. The court is likely to pass the order on Wednesday.

The petitioners had earlier moved Calcutta High Court, seeking visit permission, and the HC last month asked them to go to the trial court. Ay the trial court on Wednesday, the victim's parents' lawyers argued that the "role of the private counsel in assisting the court was by bridging the gap of the lapses of probe". They also said by visiting the place of occurrence, counsels will have "authentic and unmediated understanding of the space where the crime occurred". "Photos and videos may not give a clear picture of the rooms and the place of occurrence," said Phiroze Edulji, the parents' lawyer. RG Kar ex-principal Sandip Ghosh and former Tallah PS OC Abhijit Mandal were present at court. While the state counsel argued there was no enabling provision for visiting the place of occurrence, Ghosh's lawyer, Zohaib Rauf, said if the court allowed them, they "would not stand in the way". "We are leaving it to the court's discretion. The judge reserved the order on Tuesday," Rauf said.
