• Can SSC defend ‘tainted’ candidates: HC
    The Statesman | 11 July 2025
  • The Division Bench of Justice Soumen Sen today put a poser to both the School Service Commission and the state, asking the SSC on whether the Commission was in a position to argue for the ‘tainted’ candidates or whether it had any legal standing to argue for them.

The SSC however, continued to vouch for the ‘tainted’ candidates to appear in the SSC recruitment process after a single Bench of Justice Sougata Bhattacharya rejected the arguments and barred tainted candidates from appearing in the SSC recruitment process.

The hearing today at the Division Bench of justice Soumen Sen in Calcutta High court saw that the SSC counsel Kalyan Banerjee continued to stand by the tainted candidates, saying should the tainted candidates be barred from appearing in the recruitment process as ruled by the single Bench, then all the unsuccessful candidates of 2016 should face the same fate.

Meanwhile, during the hearing today, the SSC informed the court that till date about 2.60 lakh applications had been with them out of which only 188 ‘tainted’ candidates have applied so far. The total candidates identified as ‘tainted’ are 1,801. The hearing will continue tomorrow.
