  • Kalyani: Two teachers, including the headmaster of a school in Nadia's Ranaghat, were arrested on Wednesday following allegations that they incited students to beat a stray dog to death. Two more teachers implicated in the act remain on the run.

A viral video of the incident, recorded at Gayeshpur Netaji Vidyamandir in Kalyani, shows uniformed students repeatedly striking a dog with sticks within the school premises. Several teachers can be seen encouraging the students while they laugh. The dog succumbed to the injuries on the spot.

A police complaint was lodged by animal activist Pritha Chakraborty at Gayeshpur police outpost, detailing how multiple teachers supported the violent act. The complaint included signatures from five additional witnesses.

"Upon receiving the complaint we immediately registered a case and began our investigation," said the investigating officer.

According to school authorities, the dog had reportedly bitten several students and staff members over the past few weeks. "We had informed the local civic authorities multiple times, but no measures were taken," a source said.

"Regardless of the provocation, cruelty to animals cannot be condoned. This is both a moral and legal failing," said a representative of a local NGO.
