The West Bengal government submitted a sealed report on the progress of the investigation into the rape of a 24-year-old student at a law college in South Kolkata to the Calcutta High Court on Thursday.

The state’s counsel also presented the case diary to the division bench of Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Smita Das De, and the court went through the victim’s statement taken under Section 183 of the BNSS and medical documents as well.

After this, the bench observed, “The progress report is to be given to the victim. We are not divulging what we have seen. A comprehensive report will be served to the victim’s advocate on the condition that the progress report will not be divulged to any agency. It shall not be shared with any authority without the permission of court, it is only for the information of the victim.”

The victim is satisfied with the investigation till date, according to her counsel. Police have also submitted a report on why local officers “did not take any preventive measures” despite having been allegedly informed of threats made against the victim.

The law college has submitted a report as well: according to college sources, the college had put up notices in the months of September and November last year, stating that students cannot stay in college beyond college hours, but the students “did not follow” the instruction.

After hearing all sides, the court ordered a report to be filed in the form of an affidavit by the Deputy Commissioner of Police on the progress of investigation after four weeks. The matter will next be heard on July 17.

In the last week of June, three PILs were separately filed in the Calcutta High Court, seeking CBI and court-monitored probes into the alleged rape of the student, as well as an increase in security in colleges across West Bengal and an audit of security status in state colleges.
