A low-pressure area was formed over south Bengal, triggering continuous rainfall across Kolkata and other districts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.
The system is moving slowly westward towards Jharkhand and is expected to shift to north Chhattisgarh in the coming days. The monsoon trough currently stretches from the low-pressure zone across Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal to the northeast Bay of Bengal.
Several southern districts in West Bengal are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on Thursday. A marine advisory has been issued, warning fishermen against venturing into the sea.
While rainfall intensity eased slightly across south Bengal in the past 24 hours, light to moderate showers with thunderstorms are forecast to continue across most districts through the week. Heavy rainfall is likely in North and South 24-Parganas on Monday, IMD officials said. Kolkata had overcast skies on Thursday morning, with occasional light showers. The city’s minimum temperature dipped to 25.1°C, 1.8°C below normal, while Wednesday’s maximum stood at 27.4°C, 5.1°C below average. Relative humidity ranged between 97 per cent and 98 per cent, with rainfall totalling 12 mm in the past 24 hours.

In North Bengal, rainfall remained subdued over the past 24 hours, with Darjeeling receiving 23.2 mm, Kalimpong 31 mm, and Cooch Behar 24.5 mm.
