  • Kolkata: After two days of incessant rain, the city received short spells of showers on Thursday. The showers could remain infrequent till the weekend since the low pressure that triggered 87.5 mm of rainfall between Monday and Tuesday evening moved towards the western districts of Bengal and Jharkhand, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said. The rain is set to return on Saturday under the impact of the monsoon trough that will pass through the region.

Kolkata received 20.7 mm of rainfall on Thursday. While Bankura, Purulia, Birbhum, East and West Burdwan, Murshidabad, and north Bengal received heavy showers on Thursday, the rain is likely to lose intensity by Friday, when there will be light showers. "The monsoon trough coupled with the normal monsoon flow may lead to further showers from Saturday," said RMC weather scientist H R Biswas.

The continuing rain and the cloud cover kept the maximum temperature below 30°C for the sixth consecutive day. Kolkata clocked a maximum of 29.6°C on Thursday. It is expected to climb to 31°C on Friday.

A bulletin by RMC on Thursday said: "The low-pressure area over Gangetic Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand lay over south Jharkhand and neighbourhood. The intensity of rainfall is very likely to decrease. However, due to the presence of monsoon flow, light to moderate fairly widespread to widespread rain/thundershower is very likely in districts of Bengal. Also, rainfall activity is likely to increase slightly over north Bengal during July 13-16 July 2025.
