  • Malda: A 35-year-old Trinamool Congress worker was hacked to death, allegedly by a TMC panchayat member, at a birthday party at English Bazaar on Thursday night. Three others, including the victim's wife, were hospitalised with wounds. The suspect was later arrested.

Abul Kalam Azad, a Trinamool worker from Manikchak, had dealings in land and property with Kajigram panchayat member Mainul Sk. On Thursday evening, both were attending a birthday party at Lakshmipur when a brawl ensued. Mainul and his aides attacked Azad with daggers and a sickle, killing him on the spot. Azad's wife and two others were injured in a bid to save him.

Police arrived at the spot and rushed the victim's wife, Siuli Khatun, and the injured Atimul Momin and Dilbar Momin to Malda Medical College & Hospital. Later, based on a complaint filed by Azad's father, Mainul was arrested.

Malda SP Pradeep Yadav said: "The attack took place due to a previous grudge over a love affair and possibly some land issues. The main accused has been held and raids are on to nab the others.

"District TMC president Rahim Bakshi acknowledged that both were from Trinamool but said the murder was not linked to politics. TMC women's cell chief and zilla parishad member Pratibha Singha, however, said: "Mainul is known to be part of the land mafia and had many criminal cases against him. We were against letting him into the party. But our president took him.
