Senior officials from Indian Oil Corporation and Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) have jointly inspected the venues for the upcoming BJP event in Durgapur, accompanied by local party leaders.
Lakshman Ghorui, MLA of Durgapur West, stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address a gathering at Nehru Stadium in Durgapur on 18 July. Due to the persistent monsoon rains, the stadium grounds are waterlogged, and the central public sector undertakings have been tasked with preparing the site for the large-scale rally.
The Prime Minister had initially been scheduled to address a rally in Dum Dum on the same day, but party sources have confirmed that the event has been cancelled and relocated to Durgapur. High-level officials are conducting daily inspections to ensure readiness.
Supporters and leaders from Asansol, Bankura, Bishnupur and East Burdwan are expected to attend the event. Sources revealed that Mr Modi will first speak at a rally in Motihari, Bihar, before flying to Andal to address the Durgapur gathering around 1 p.m.
“This will be a historic rally,” said Lakshman Ghorui. “The Prime Minister last visited Durgapur in 2019, and now, after six years, he returns once more.”
Narendra Nath Chakraborty, Trinamul Congress West Burdwan district president, welcomed the Prime Minister’s visit but added, “The people of West Bengal hope he will bring something positive to the state. Although he is welcome in Durgapur, Bengal wants its own daughter.”
He further stated: “The Prime Minister has visited Durgapur before, but the people of Bengal remain hopeful. We are confident of winning all seats in the district next year.”
Currently, the BJP holds three Assembly seats in West Burdwan district—Durgapur West, Asansol South and Kulti—and aims to retain these seats while expanding its presence in the 2026 state elections.
