  • Significant rainfall in the Tenughat dam catchment area in Bokaro has prompted authorities to increase the dam’s discharge, triggering heightened water release from upstream DVC dams earlier today.

The combined discharge from Maithon and Panchet dams surged to 58,000 cusecs today, up from 40,000 cusecs yesterday. The Durgapur Barrage, managed by the state Irrigation Department, maintained a relatively steady outflow of 54,000 cusecs, in light of the downstream conditions. “Discharge was not increased significantly to prevent hardship to downstream localities,” stated Sanjoy Majumdar, executive engineer at the Damodar head works division.

Bokaro’s Tenughat catchment received 74.60 mm of rainfall over the past 24 hours, compared to 57.20 mm the previous day—making it the wettest location in the Damodar river basin. Durgapur followed with 35 mm, while Asansol recorded only 2.20 mm. Rainfall in Maithon and Panchet has declined markedly, measuring 18.80 mm and 7.60 mm respectively in the last 24 hours.
