  • Durgapur: PM Narendra Modi, who is scheduled to inaugurate a host of industrial projects in Durgapur on July 18, will address a public rally there as well.

This will be Modi's first rally in the state after Bengal BJP elected a new president.

"We are expecting people from West Bardhaman, East Bardhaman and Bankura to attend the rally. The turnout is likely to cross two lakh at the Durgapur Nehru Stadium," said state BJP general secretary Jagannath Chattopadhyay.

On Sunday, state BJP functionary Sunil Bansal went to visit the stadium with state office bearers and lawmakers.

Modi's address will be attended primarily by people from two Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bardhaman — Bardhaman-Durgapur and Asansol.

In both of these constituencies, the party was defeated in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

"The PM will inaugurate a number of projects involving PSUs from sectors like power, national highway, steel and petroleum. In Bengal, not a single industry was inaugurated. Instead, Trinamool is using the state machinery to increase the wealth of their leaders and workers. Police is being used to protect the interest of the ruling party," Chattopadhyay said. Modi will first visit Bihar, where the assembly polls are scheduled this year, for an election campaign. He will reach Andal airport and head to Durgapur from there.

"The state is gearing up for the election next year and PM Modi's address is likely to touch upon issues that would send a strong message to Trinamool before its martyrs' day celebration on July 21," a BJP functionary said.
