• At 15 spots across city, civic body waits for rain to stop to start road repair work

  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will conduct a night drive to repair roads damaged due to incessant rain. From the Dum Dum-Cossipore belt in north Kolkata to Biren Roy Road (West) in Behala, the list is getting longer as KMC's initiative to repair roads has remained largely unsuccessful due to persistent rain. "We prepared a list of rain-ravaged roads that need urgent attention. We thought of conducting a special night-long drive to take care of them and will finish the job in a week if it does not rain again," said a senior official from the KMC roads department.

According to a KMC source, the civic body's roads department will take up repair of Shyambazar five-point crossing, Chittaran Avenue, MG Road, BBD Bagh, Amherst Street, BB Ganguly Street, Bidhan Sarani, APC Roy Road, Asutosh Mukherjee Road, Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Road, Gariahat Road, Tollygunge Circular Road, and Alipore Road in another seven days. A civic official conceded that parts of NSC Bose Road (Tollygunge) and Diamond Harbour Road also needed urgent attention.

But the fate of large parts of roads that fall in the port region, which also need immediate repair, is yet to be decided as the civic brass wants the Kolkata Port authorities to either take up the repair or release necessary funds for the KMC to carry out the work. "We know that the condition of Coal Berth Road, Circular Garden Reach Road, and Paharpur Road, which fall under jurisdiction of KoPT, is deplorable. But we can't take up their repair until the matter is sorted between the KoPT and the KMC," an official said.

Residents of large parts of Behala have been complaining about inaction in repairing stretches that have been lying dug up for a long time. According to Sunirmal Sen from Motilal Gupta Road, all requests for immediate repair of some of the worst stretches have fallen on deaf ears. "We have suffered the wretched condition of Motilal Gupta Road for a few years now due to a sewerage upgrade project. Large stretches of the road are lying dug up, leading to frequent road accidents," he said. Likewise, the condition of MG Road (near Thakurpukur cancer hospital) and Biren Roy Road (West) is also deplorable.
