West Bengal police have arrested another Trinamul Congress (TMC) worker in connection with the recent killing of party leader Rezzaq Khan in Bhangar, South 24-Parganas district, taking the total number of arrests in the case to four.
The latest suspect, identified as Ajaharuddin Molla, was picked up late Sunday night from a housing complex in the Polerhat area by officials from the North Kashipur police station. Molla, a former member of the Indian Secular Front (ISF), had joined the ruling TMC in July last year along with one Asma Bibi, reportedly under the guidance of local heavyweight Shaukat Molla. Police sources said Molla had previously suffered serious injuries while allegedly attempting to make crude bombs during his time with ISF.
Despite these injuries, he was inducted into the TMC. His arrest follows the detention of Mofazzel Molla, a local TMC booth president and influential figure in the Bhangar Assembly unit. Investigators reportedly traced Ajaharuddin’s movements through mobile tower location tracking and interrogations of Mofazzel, which led to his arrest. Two other suspects, Jahan Ali Khan, also known as Kangal, and Raju Molla, were also taken into custody on similar charges. All four are accused in connection with a recent shootout that claimed the life of Rezzaq Khan, a TMC leader in the region.
The police plan to produce Ajaharuddin Molla in Baruipur court on Monday and are likely to seek custody for further questioning. The incident has sparked political tension in the Bhangar area, where rival factions within the TMC and previous ISF affiliations have long been sources of conflict.
