  • Police have arrested four people in connection with the murder of TMC leader Razzak Khan, who was gunned down and hacked to death last Thursday night in Bijoyganj Bazar.

The case has been registered under section 103 (1) (murder) and 3 (5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.

The prime accused, Mofajjel Molla (50) of Bijoyganj Bazar, was apprehended on Saturday night from a field near Panapukur F P School. Molla, described by police sources as a “close friend” of the victim, was arrested and interrogated on the same day as the murder. Investigators believe his role in the killing is “very important”.

On Sunday, the Baruipur Subdistrict Court remanded Molla to eight-day police custody, and he is scheduled to be produced before the court again on July 20.

Police claim that Mofajjel Molla and Razzak had a long standing territorial dispute over establishing control of a “local market”. Mofajjel “lost his grip” on the market after he “lost a Panchayat election to an ISF candidate”, while Khan “took control”.

On Monday, three more persons were arrested in connection with the case. They have been identified as Azharuddin Molla (25) of Bhangar, Jahan Ali Khan alias Kangal (50) of Bijoyganj Bazar, and Raju Molla (26).

Razzak Khan was attacked around 10 pm last Thursday while returning home on his bike after a meeting at the party office in Bijoyganj Bazar. He was first shot at Sirishtala on the road to Bhangarh Khalpar, near Bijoyganj Bazar, and subsequently hacked to death.
