Durgapur visit: Modi to launch projects, join roadshow
The Statesman | 16 July 2025
The top leadership of the BJP held a meeting in Durgapur yesterday to prepare for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit on 18 July.
Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to participate in a roadshow from Gandhi More to Nehru Stadium in Durgapur, where he will later address a public rally. During the event, he will also inaugurate several central government projects and lay the foundation stones for others.
After attending a public rally in Motihari, Bihar, the Prime Minister will fly to Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport in Andal. From there, he will travel by road to Nehru Stadium in Durgapur, where he is expected to arrive at around 2.30 p.m.
Senior BJP leaders, including Sunil Bansal, Amitabha Chakraborty, Satish Dhan, Jagannath Chatterjee, MPs Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato and Soumitra Khan, former Union Minister Dr Subhas Sarkar, Bankura MLA Neeladri Sekhar Dana, and Durgapur West MLA Lakshman Ghorui attended the preparatory meeting.
Supporters from Burdwan East, Bankura, and Asansol-Durgapur constituencies have been invited to the Prime Minister’s event. Agnimitra Paul, MLA from Asansol South, distributed invitations in Burnpur earlier today.
“We had a party organisational meeting at Mangalik Hall in Durgapur, attended by top state and central leaders, to finalise the last-minute preparations for the mega event,” said Durgapur West MLA, Lakshman Ghorui.
However, both the District Congress and the Trinamul Congress appear to be downplaying the significance of the Prime Minister’s upcoming visit. In a setback for the BJP, a senior party leader from Kulti recently resigned and joined the TMC along with his supporters, in the presence of state law and judiciary minister Moloy Ghatak.
Notably, the BJP currently holds the Kulti Assembly seat in West Burdwan district, with Dr Ajoy Poddar serving as the sitting MLA.
Of the nine Assembly constituencies in Burdwan West district, the BJP holds three. The party is making a concerted effort to retain its stronghold and win additional seats in the upcoming state Assembly elections next year.
Local BJP leaders have claimed that approximately two lakh people are expected to attend the Prime Minister’s event on 18 July.
