The Damodar valley Corporation has released about 57,000 cusecs of water from its Maithon and Panchet dams today morning leading to huge rush of water in the lower basin.
About 38,000 cusecs of water was released from the Panchet dam and 18,000 cusecs of water from the Maithon dam. There was incessant rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Damodar river basin leading to increase of water level in its dams.
The rise in water level at the Durgapur barrage in the late afternoon created further chances of water being released from the Durgapur barrage to keep its storage capacity within limits.
Due to the release, the districts lying on the lower basin of Damodar like Hooghly, East and West Burdwan and Bankura are under flood alert, particularly the areas on the banks of the river.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has blamed the Jharkhand government and Damodar Valley Corporation since the past few years for imposing man-made floods in West Bengal.
Yesterday, the DVC had released 48,000 cusecs of water from its Panchet and Maithon dams, but today morning the amount has been increased.
The dams released water on the basis of Damodar Valley Reservoir Regulatory Authority (DVRRC) instructions. Besides DVC, representatives of other state governments are also members of the DVRRC committee.
