No civic volunteers (CV) will be allowed to enter into the state secretariat Nabanna complex.
Days after a woman CV from Tamluk in East Midnapore, braving the strict vigilance of high security arrangements at the Nabanna premises, reached the 14th floor where the office of the chief minister Mamata Banerjee is housed on 15 July, police administration on Thursday has decided not to allow any civic police inside the secretariat complex.
Security personnel who were on duty intercepted her after seeing her suspiciously hanging around the corridor on the 14th floor and detained her on the spot for investigation. She was later handed over to the Shibpur police station as the secretariat complex falls under it.
Serious questions in connection with security lapses at the Nabanna were raised following the incident on 15 July.
Sources at the secretariat said that security has been tightened with strong policing in every floor of the building after the incident. No civic police personnel would be allowed to go inside the complex, sources said.
Civic volunteers in West Bengal are contractual workers engaged by the state government to assist with various tasks, primarily in traffic management and other minor duties. They are not formally trained for law enforcement roles like investigations or arrests. Eligibility criteria generally include being a local resident, at least 20 years old, having passed Class VIII, and possessing no criminal record.
