Councillor seeks drainage network to check Jodhpur Park waterlogging

Kolkata: Severe waterlogging in the Jodhpur Park area following the recent sharp spells of shower and the flurry of complaints have forced KMC to sit up and examine the situation. Local councillor Mousumi Das pointed out that a 250m stretch from the Taltala ground towards South City Mall was a "no-drainage zone", the cause of the flooding. She submitted a proposal to the KMC's drainage department to establish a drainage network there to wash out rainwater and spare residents the pain after every sharp spell of showers. "It is astonishing that even in 2025, such an important road in the city is still a no-drain stretch. Important establishments, including a hospital, are located along this road. The absence of a drainage system causes waterlogging for hours," she said. Das on Wednesday submitted her request for the construction of a proper drainage system to Tarak Singh, MMiC, in charge of sewerage and drainage. She also attached a drawing of the "no-drainage zone". "Drainage engineers are looking into the matter," said Singh.
KMC drainage department engineers inspected the area on Thursday afternoon. "The road has a narrow pipe that has to be replaced with a bigger one for easy flow of rainwater. The capacity of the Jodhpur Park drainage pumping station has to be augmented but we are facing space constraints. We need an alternative space, where we can build a bigger pumping station. We have sent a request to the borough chairman," a senior drainage department official said. Jodhpur Park residents hope the KMC will act fast to spare them the pain they face every time it rains hard. Arijit Ghosh, who lives on Prince Anwar Shah Road, said, "The place near the Taltala ground gets flooded. It has become a regular affair for us to wade through water in the monsoon. We have been asking for a permanent solution but no action has been taken so far.
" Another resident, Tapan Das, said, "We are waiting for a respite from the waterlogging in our neighbourhood.
