  • The city’s iconic Roxy cinema hall is set to get an overhaul, restoring its glory of the yore.

CREDAI Kolkata has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) for the renovation of the iconic Roxy cinema hall.

This is a new lease of life for the 127-year old Roxy Cinema, one of the landmarks of the New Market area and a vestige of the Art Deco era.

The members of CREDAI Kolkata have pledged Rs 5 crore towards its repurposing. Renovation work will begin soon.

Now on the revival path, the heritage building will be repurposed, lending it a new lease of life. CREDAI Kolkata will mainly sponsor Roxy’s interior reconstruction and have commissioned a city-based architecture firm to implement the work, under the guidance and approval of KMC. Considering its heritage status, all guidelines will be adhered to regarding the edifice’s age, fragility and aesthetics, under the direction of the Heritage Committee of KMC.

Once the civil work of the outer part required to be taken up is completed by the KMC, CREDAI Kolkata’s scope of work shall be undertaken by the architecture firm during the execution of which, KMC will continually inspect and supervise the ongoing restoration.

KMC mayor Firhad Hakim said: “It was a very noble initiative to restore the city’s built heritage and it was commendable that CREDAI Kolkata has come forward to support this project.”

Sidharth Pansari, president, CREDAI Kolkata, said: “We not only invest in new developments but we deeply care about preservation of our city’s heritage and the architectural legacy of past eras. Hence, we have come forward to restore the eminence that a heritage building such as Roxy cinema carries.”
