Kolkata: Bengal governor CV Anand Bose, also the chancellor of state-run universities, has sought explanations from VCs who didn't attend a meeting he held at Raj Bhavan on Saturday.
Bose warned that failure to provide a satisfactory response may result in a ban on their entrance into the Raj Bhavan premises. As of now, Raj Bhavan's doors are closed to them, Bose added.
Bose added that he would approach the Supreme Court to determine whether vice-chancellors should follow directives from the governor or state govt in university administration.
On Saturday, 36 VCs were invited to the meeting. A source said of the 19 permanent VCs, a representative from Vidyasagar University and the West Bengal State University VC attended the meeting, while the others were absent. Among VCs appointed by the governor, only seven attended the meeting, including the Calcutta University and Sanskrit University VCs.
At the meeting, Bose emphasised that universities must make appointments in accordance with law and indicated that staff should be appointed to permanent positions promptly. He also said that teachers' promotions should not be withheld and must be conducted according to proper legal procedures.
