  • The law college in Kolkata, where a student was raped last month, has decided to recruit two ex-servicemen to boost security on the campus, besides installing CCTV cameras. The college will also discontinue the practice of hiring casual staffers.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the institute’s governing body on Thursday as the agency which handled the security was blacklisted and dismissed following the incident. While one of the guards is in custody in connection with the probe, the other has been removed.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Sibranjan Chatterjee, a member of the governing body, said a resolution was passed in this regard. “Ex-Army personnel will be appointed through e-tendering. The security of the students and staff is of utmost importance to us. If the guards had performed their duty properly, such an unfortunate incident would not have occurred,” he added.

According to an official with the college, CCTVs will also be installed on the premises. A survey will be conducted to decide the position of the cameras to be installed and to determine how many would be required. The state will be informed accordingly. At present, there is only one permanent security guard at the college who is set to retire in six months, the official said.

The meeting also decided not to appoint casual staff anymore. The contracts of two others who had been appointed to various posts along with the main accused Monojit Mishra on July 2 last year, expired on July 16. The contracts have not been renewed.

The 24-year-old student was raped on June 25. On Tuesday, a court in Alipore extended the judicial custody of Mishra, 31, and three other accused in the case till August 5. The four have been in judicial custody since July 8.

The others arrested in the case include contractual security guard Pinaki Banerjee as well as students Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukherjee, 20. Earlier this month, the Detective Department of the Kolkata police took over the probe in the case from the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
