• Park St cave-in: Sewer leak repair may take 10 days

  • Kolkata: A team of civic officials dug up an area at the crossing of Park Street and Wood Street on Sunday, beginning repairs in a leakage in the century-old underground brick sewer that triggered subsidence at the site on Saturday night. The civic team said the leak in the 1,200-mm diameter sewer line might take 10 days to complete. According to a KMC official, the engineers detected constant seepage of water in the sewer line.

The official said, the task to detect more leakages is ongoing, and the nature of the repair work is complex and time-consuming. "Once the search ends, we will start the repair jobs. But it will take time as the job on one of the busiest thoroughfares is not simple," said a KMC drainage department official. Once the repair of the sewer line is over, the site will be handed over to the KMC roads department for the repair of the dug-up stretch near Allen Park. "Once the road is handed over to us, we will start the repairing process, considering the traffic on the prime road can't be disturbed for long," said a KMC roads department senior official.

The KMC official also pointed out that large parts of Asutosh Mukherjee Road have become a motorist's nightmare due to digging and hurried road repairs. Besides developing craters, large stretches offer bikers a bumpy and risky ride because of large-scale undulations. Similarly, stretches of Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Road need to go through a relaying process to ensure a jerk-free ride. Both Asutosh Mukherjee Road and Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Road suffered subsidence several times from leakages in the underground water supply lines or sewer lines.

"We took up the matter with the KMC administration, requesting the civic brass to take up an urgent repair to offer relief to the motorists and bikers," said the civic official.
