  • Kolkata: The city received a late-evening shower that lashed most parts of central and south Kolkata on Sunday. It started around 8.40 pm and was accompanied by thunder and lightning. Kolkata was cloudy in the day time, with a few spells of drizzle, recording a maximum temperature of 31.8°C. The rain pulled the mercury down at the end of a relatively dry and warm day. The rain was triggered by local clouds that have been forming due to an active monsoon trough, said the Met office. "Such short, sharp spells of rain will continue while the monsoon trough remains active in Gangetic Bengal. They may not occur uniformly across the city since the clouds are local. But the showers are set to intensify from Tuesday," said RMC weather scientist Sourish Bandopadhyay.

The temperature could rise by a degree on Monday, and there may be more light showers. More intense and frequent showers are expected in the city and some districts of south Bengal from Tuesday. "It will be generally cloudy with moderate rain in Kolkata. Some areas of North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hoogly, and Burdwan may receive moderate to heavy rain from Tuesday," said Bandopadhyay.
