Kolkata: Paramanand Toppannawar, the 26-year-old MBA student at a premier B-school who was arrested on charges of rape, resumed his classes on Monday after spending more than a week in police custody. The youngster was arrested on July 12 and granted bail on July 19. He was released on July 22.
The institute's academic council held an emergency meeting on Friday and decided that the student would be allowed to attend classes from Monday. However, he will not be allowed to stay at the hostel. Legal experts informed the authorities that they could not legally prevent the student from attending classes. The charges against the youth are yet to be substantiated as the woman who had initially levelled the allegation did not undergo a medical checkup or record her statement thereafter.
An official said, "The student came to the institute and signed the register at the main gate. That is the general rule of the institute for anyone coming from outside. He attended two classes, one in the afternoon and another in the evening. He was accompanied by his mother, who sat in the corridor while he attended classes.
"Another official said the institute had asked the student to bring a guardian or someone from the family for a couple of weeks so that any untoward situation can be prevented. "It is odd to see a mother sit in the corridor. Instead, we have decided to ask her to sit in a room beside our postgraduate programme office," a source said.
Toppannawar has rented accommodation near the campus, where he is staying with his parents. He visited the campus on Thursday and submitted a letter and the bail order to the institute director, requesting that he be allowed to resume classes.
