  • The Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore has forecast continued rainfall across Kolkata and parts of south Bengal due to a well-marked low-pressure area over central India and associated weather systems.

The system will bring in rains in the city till Wednesday and may ease from Thursday, said the weather office.

According to officials, a distinct low-pressure system currently lies over Madhya Pradesh, while a monsoon trough extends from northwest Madhya Pradesh to northeastern Bangladesh, passing through Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal. A secondary trough stretches from Bikaner through Kota and the low-pressure region to Digha, drawing significant moisture from the Bay of Bengal. As a result, favourable conditions for rainfall are expected to persist over southern Bengal for the next few days. The weather office has issued a heavy rainfall alert for eight districts—Hooghly, North 24-Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia —through Wednesday.

Thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph may also occur in Kolkata during this period. Sea conditions have remained rough for the past two days due to the depression and associated cyclonic circulation. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until at least Monday night, with wind speeds over the northern Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas reaching 35 to 45 kmph and gusting up to 55 kmph.

Meanwhile, northern Bengal is also bracing for intense rainfall. Kalimpong, South Dinajpur, and Malda are likely to experience heavy downpours on Monday, while Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and North Dinajpur may receive similar rainfall on Tuesday. Rainfall is expected to intensify from Thursday and continue through the week across several districts. On Monday, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 27.1 degrees Celsius, 0.4 degrees above normal, while Sunday’s maximum temperature stood at 31.8 degrees, slightly below normal by 0.8 degrees.
