  • Kolkata: Undergraduation applications on centralised admission portal (CAP) can last be submitted on Wednesday night but the candidates can continue to update their details, including their OBC categories, if applicable, till Friday night. The state higher education department opened the upgrade option to candidates on Tuesday morning and informed them over phone calls and text messages. "We were ready with all the options and allowed students to update their major details, especially the category ones. They can access more options of subjects and colleges, according to their choice. A major number of candidates already updated their details," said an official. However, the registration will close on Wednesday night. The upgrade option was offered from Tuesday morning to make major changes that students could utilise until August 1. Candidates who registered with the CAP received phone calls and text messages to update their details.

Another official said that important dates, including those of publishing merit lists, seat allotment and admission, were likely to be declared on Wednesday.

The upgrade options were offered after the SC's Monday order on the OBC list removed all roadblocks to undergraduate admissions. Given the uncertainty over OBC, the higher education department had last extended the centralised portal application deadline to July 30, following three revisions. The initial deadline was set on July 1, which was pushed back to July 15 and then, July 25. The uncertainty has stalled the publication of WBJEE results and Presidency University admissions. West Bengal Joint Entrance Board chairperson Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee said, "Let us first receive a copy of the order and a govt order.

" But an official said the result date was likely to be declared on Wednesday.

Following the SC order, the legal team advising the education department stated there remained no legal impediment to following the 2025 OBC list in UG admissions. According to the updated 2025 OBC list, 76 communities are additionally classified under OBC A and B. The earlier, 2010 OBC list included 64 communities. The updated list increases OBC reservations from 7% before 2010 to 17% in 2025.

Jadavpur University had not waited but initiated their admissions, following the 7% OBC reservations, set before 2010. A JU official said now that the SC had given the order, they would set aside 17% seats for OBC category but candidates would have to furnish valid certificates. Calcutta University, too, followed the 2010 format for their internal UG courses and PG admissions. A CU official said they would now proceed according to legal advice.

At Presidency University, UG entrance tests were held on June 21 and 22. Teachers on Tuesday wrote to the VC, seeking a meeting with the admission committee. They reportedly expressed concerns over the "inordinate delay in the UG and PG admissions", which they said, would affect the quality of students and the number of candidates taking admission. They also raised questions on the handling of the admission process by the Joint Entrance Board. Sources said that the UG entrance test results would be declared soon, now that the OBC ambiguity had been cleared.(inputs by Dipawali Mitra)
