  • Kolkata: Cops have arrested two cyber fraudsters involved in the illegal sale of pre-activated SIM cards to cybercriminals, taking the total number of arrests to 14. The arrests are part of a series of raids started on Feb 24, which so far resulted in the seizure of over 2,300 SIM cards, along with a dozen biometric authentication machines and a substantial amount of cash. The first accused, Suvendu Gayen, was arrested from a store named Ankita Communication in Tiljala. Two fingerprint scanners, 620 prepaid SIM cards, 55 unsealed SIM cards, and a high-end mobile were seized from his possession. The second accused, Niraj Kumar Sahani, was arrested near Wellington Crossing. According to joint CP (crime & traffic) Rupesh Kumar, they collected thumb impressions from customers under the guise of failed verification attempts, while actually processing successful verifications at the service provider's end. The SIM cards were then sold to cyber crooks.
