Monsoon intensifies in city, heavy rains likely in south Bengal

The monsoon regained momentum in Kolkata with the city recording 69.3 millimetres of rainfall between Monday and Tuesday morning, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Skies are expected to remain mostly overcast over the next 24 hours, with the possibility of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across various parts of the city. Tuesday’s maximum and minimum temperatures in Kolkata are likely to hover around 30°C and 26°C, respectively.
On Monday, the city recorded a high of 30.0°C — 2.6 degrees below normal — and a low of 25.3°C, which was 1.4 degrees below average. While the rainfall has brought temporary relief from the heat, humidity remains high, with relative humidity peaking at 98 per cent and not falling below 81 per cent, contributing to a sticky, oppressive atmosphere.
The IMD has also issued a heavy rainfall warning for several districts of south Bengal, including Howrah, Hooghly, West Midnapur, Bankura, South 24-Parganas, and West Burdwan. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h are likely to accompany the showers. Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast through Wednesday, 30 July, for Kolkata and adjoining districts such as Nadia, Murshidabad, North and South 24-Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, and East Midnapur.
Isolated areas may experience extremely heavy rainfall. The continued downpour could lead to flooding in multiple districts of South Bengal through 31 July. However, the intensity of the monsoon is expected to reduce across the region starting Friday, 1 August, according to the weather office.
