Kolkata: A detainee under the custody of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) escaped from the agency's prison cell located inside their New Town office in the early hours of Tuesday. The accused was in custody in connection with a case related to drug seizures from south Bengal. The man, identified as Sain Sk (25), and hailing from Murshidabad, escaped between 2.30 am and 3 am, said NCB sources. The Kolkata Leather Complex PS registered a case in this regard. The detective department is probing the case. The Bidhannagar Police, which shares the border, has been roped in too. The escape was reported by Amit Kumar Patel, a sub-inspector with the NCB Kolkata Zonal Unit, located at New Town. Details surrounding the escape remain unclear, and an internal investigation has been launched to determine how Sain Sk managed to evade security measures.
An alert has been sounded across the railway stations and bus terminuses across the city, and a manhunt is underway. The NCB has urged the public to report any sightings of Sain Sk to the nearest police station or contact them directly.
While the NCB team claims he pushed the cops and fled from the spot, the CCTV footage has been collected by both Kolkata Police and Bidhannagar police for leads," said an official. This escape comes at a time when the NCB is intensifying its crackdown on narcotics-related activities in the region. The bureau has been actively involved in dismantling drug networks, especially cross-border drug trade.
