  • Kolkata: On Friday, the sun emerged from the cloud cover that the city had been witnessing for the past few days. Though Kolkata remained dry for a large part of the day, it encountered light rain along with lightning and thunderclaps in the evening. The Met office has predicted further improvement by Saturday.

While the maximum temperature continued to remain below the normal mark on Friday, the Met office expects the mercury to start rising gradually with the reduction in rain intensity and frequency.

"One or two spells of thundershowers may continue in the city in between sunny spells, but chances of intermittent and uniform showers are low for now," said Met scientist H R Biswas, head of weather forecast section at RMC, Kolkata.

However, some parts of the city's surroundings received significant showers on Friday. A strong monsoon flow was triggering rain over the past few days. With rain on 28 days of last month, this was the wettest July in a decade.

The Met officials said that the monsoon flow will be more active in north Bengal, where a heavy rain alert has been issued between Saturday and Monday. The flow in south Bengal will be normal.

While July ended on a rainy note, the city received only 1.3 mm on rain on Friday till evening. Aug is considered the second wettest monsoon month with slightly lower monthly rain count than that of July. The Met officials said there is no big weather system at present to trigger widespread rain in the city for now but indicated rain count would be normal by the end of the month.
