Kolkata: Five persons were injured after the rear portion of a dilapidated two-storey building — Ghoshbagan Rajbari — on Maniktala Main Road in Kankurgachhi collapsed on Saturday. While a 55-year-old has been hospitalised, the rest of the injured — including two children — suffered minor injuries. Police said 750 m of the wall had collapsed. Biju Kabithiya (55), Shyam Kabithiya (39), Mita Kabithiya (35), Pawan Kabithiya (6), and Birat Kabithiya (10), were sleeping in the adjoining house when the wall collapsed on them. All of them were rushed to Maniktala ESI Hospital. Except for Biju, the others were discharged after treatment. The century-old building had been marked as hazardous by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).
Despite multiple notices issued to the address, locals alleged no measures were taken up to pull down the unsafe portions. Civic officials said the remaining portions of the structure are also lying in a precarious condition and pose a risk to the neighbourhood. The KMC has promised immediate action.
This incident has reignited debate over the city's handling of its ageing buildings, particularly in north Kolkata.
