• Temp below normal, Met predicts rain spells today

  • Kolkata: Despite no significant rain until late evening on Thursday, a cloudy sky ensured the mercury stayed below the normal mark. The Met officials have not ruled out a few spells of rain until Friday. While there is no major system to trigger intermittent rain at present, there is a possibility of a low-pressure area developing over Bay of Bengal in the middle of next week.

Kolkata received only traces of rain throughout the day, but neighbouring areas, like Howrah, Dum Dum, and Barrackpore, got spells. The cloud cover kept the weather comfortable. At 29.7°C, the maximum temperature was 2.3 notches below normal, and the minimum, at 26°C, was 0.5°C lower than normal.

"There is still a possibility of a few spells of rain in Kolkata until Friday. After that, the chances of rain, its frequency, and intensity are likely to decrease," said meteorologist H R Biswas, head of the weather forecast section, RMC, Kolkata.

According to the IMD, the monsoon is active in south Bengal at present, triggering multiple spells of rain in the districts. "There is also the possibility of a low-pressure area developing over the Bay of Bengal by Aug 13. We can assess its impact only after the system forms, depending on its position, movement, and strength," Biswas added.

Last month was the wettest July in Kolkata in a decade. With spells of rain in the first seven days of Aug, this month has a rain surplus of around 50% so far.
