Kolkata Police have registered a case and launched a formal investigation into allegations made by senior BJP leader and former West Bengal party president Dilip Ghosh that a pornographic video circulating on social media falsely identifies him.
A First Information Report (FIR) was filed at the Cyber Police Station in Lalbazar on Wednesday afternoon, following a formal complaint lodged by Mr Ghosh via email. According to police sources, a special team has been constituted to probe the matter and forensic analysis of the video has been initiated.
The video in question, widely shared across various social media platforms, shows a man engaged in a sexual act with a woman. Several users alleged the man resembled Mr Ghosh, prompting public outrage and political controversy. The BJP leader has strongly denied any involvement, calling the video “a fabricated and malicious attempt to defame” him. He alleged a conspiracy to damage his reputation using digital tools, and requested the police to identify the origin of the video and those responsible for its circulation.
The FIR, based on his complaint, states that the video was “deliberately created and distributed online with obscene visuals” and that the faces and private parts of the individuals involved are clearly visible. The video has reportedly been shared across at least nine digital platforms, including several YouTube channels, which Mr Ghosh named in his complaint.
Police have said that administrators of the social media accounts and channels involved will be summoned for questioning. Investigators will attempt to trace how the video was made and disseminated. No arrests have been made so far. The case is being investigated on priority basis, the sources said.
