Kolkata: A woman, Mahua De (45), and her mother, Shipra Rakshit (70), died, while the woman's husband remains in critical condition, after an alleged family suicide pact at Devi Park in Narayanpur, Rajarhat on Friday. Mounting debts is reportedly the reason.
Police said the family had rented a place nine months ago after selling their home in Dashodrone, Rajarhat, to repay debts. Mahua's husband, Sanjay De (50), is undergoing treatment at RG Kar Hospital.
Sanjay reportedly told officers that heavy financial liabilities from stock market losses forced him to sell his house, car and bike. Still, debt pressure persisted. He also suffered from a prolonged illness, he told cops.
Officers said Sanjay admitted to consuming sleeping pills and BP medicines and giving the medicines to his wife and mother-in-law after an argument on Thursday. Police said the three consumed over 60 sleeping and BP pills. Mahua reportedly opposed the plan.
The landlord, who lived in the adjacent house, raised the alarm after not receiving any response to his calls. Police broke open the door to find all three lying unconscious. They took the three to hospital, where the women were declared dead.
