BJP MLA Ashok Dinda, former BJP MP Arjun Singh and BJP leaders Shanku Deb Panda and Kali Khatik have moved the Calcutta High court for anticipatory bail and quashing of the FIRs filed against them. The cases are related to alleged violence during the Nabanna Abhijan on August 9, held to recognise the first death anniversary of the doctor who was raped and murdered at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
On Wednesday, the matter was mentioned to the single bench of Justice Jay Sengupta for a hearing on an urgent basis. The court granted permission for the matter to be filled, and it is likely to be heard tomorrow.
While Dinda and Khatik have sought anticipatory bail, Singh and Panda moved court for the quashing of the cases.
On Tuesday, the Kolkata Police had summoned Dinda, the BJP MLA of Moyna, for allegedly threatening policemen during the Nabanna Abhijan. He has been asked to appear before the New Market Police station on August 18 at 11 am.
According to a police officer, they have seized CCTV footage where Dinda is allegedly seen threatening policemen and instigating others to assault the police.
According to Kolkata Police, seven cases were lodged — five by Kolkata Police and two by Howrah Police. Four FIRs have been registered in New Market police station and one in Hare Street police station under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police.
The FIRs were lodged for allegedly violating High Court orders by not going to R R Avenue and taking a procession towards Park Street, for allegedly creating a ruckus at the “Rakhi” stall of another political party, allegedly assaulting a police constable and causing head injuries, allegedly vandalizing the office of the hawkers’ union, and allegedly damaging the camera of a mediaperson and “confining” him.
Five policemen were injured and admitted to SSKM Hospital on Saturday. Four of them were discharged after first aid; one was admitted to the trauma care centre with scalp injuries. On Sunday, Commissioner Manoj Verma met the hospitalised constable, identified as Prasanta Poddar, 36, who is a security personnel of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Suburban division).
