The AIDSO took out a rally demanding the merit list of students applying for graduation be published quickly, college admissions begin and joint entrance results be published quickly.
They said 95 days have passed since the publication of the Higher Secondary results. The state higher education department has not yet been able to publish the merit list for admission to undergraduate courses. Neither the higher education department nor the education minister has given a proper answer as to why the merit list is not being published. “We believe that the state government has closed admissions in government colleges to destroy the government higher education system and give private and autonomous colleges an opportunity to make profit. If the state government wanted, it could have left the 7 per cent seats reserved for OBC vacant and completed the admission process in the colleges and started classes,” said West Bengal State Committee Secretary Biswajit Roy.
We fear that the way the state government is delaying admissions at the undergraduate level will result in more ordinary students turning away from higher education and more seats remaining vacant, said the protesters.
