  • NEW DELHI: The father of the R G Kar hospital rape-murder victim has moved the Calcutta High Court praying for setting aside a lower court order that refused permission to his lawyers to visit the crime scene at the state-run medical institution. He claims that apart from Sanjay Roy — who has been convicted and sentenced to remain in prison for the rest of his life — other people were also present when the crime happened on August 9 last year. According to his lawyer, the petition is likely to be heard by a single bench of the high court early next week. The petitioner said that an independent inspection of the crime scene is necessary to help the court identify any gaps in the investigation. He has requested that his lawyer, Phiroze Edulji, along with six junior advocates, be allowed to visit the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital for two hours for this purpose. He has also asked the court to set aside the July 9 order of the Sealdah court, which refused permission for such a visit. The body of the on-duty doctor was found in the seminar room of the hospital in north Kolkata on August 9, 2024, sparking nationwide protests. Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with the city police, was found guilty and sentenced by the Sealdah sessions court to remain in prison until the end of his natural life.(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
