Arambagh (Hooghly): Supporters of Trinamool Congress and BJP clashed with over the SIR issue in Hooghly's Khanakul on Sunday. The confrontation prompted BJP to call for a 12-hour bandh, alleging that TMC supporters from outside the area organised a street rally against SIR and assaulted BJP's women supporters in the presence of police.
TMC countered these claims, stating that BJP workers initiated the violence by hurling stones and bricks from their party office in Balpai village. Sushanta Ghosh, a BJP MLA, accused the police of failing to prevent the rally, claiming that TMC "miscreants" openly attacked BJP supporters and vandalised their party office.
In response, Swapan Nandi, a TMC leader, accused BJP workers of intentionally instigating violence due to their anticipated defeat in the upcoming assembly elections. The BJP currently holds four seats in the region, namely Goghat, Arambag, Khanakul and Pursurah.
